A Better Towel Edit
Upgrade your soft services at home.
Bath towels are too often an afterthought, a place where people choose to save/skimp on. The anonymous towel, bought in sets, replaced in sets, and rarely considered. But they’re one of the few things in the home you use daily, so they warrant better decisions.
Four years ago, I bought a pair of towels from Tekla. Large sheet towels, originally for the pool and ocean, but I ended up bringing them into the daily rotation at home. They’re still just as good. In that same stretch, I’ve replaced our standard towels at least five times. None of them held up. The reason being that I skimped on them, and compromised my values along the way—buying them from corporate spots, start-ups, whatever was easiest. When I think about the waste involved in a cycle of replacement (the money spent, resources spent, and disposal impact) versus the Tekla purchase, the contrast is stark. Lesson learned!
It’s a small, achievable upgrade that lasts. And I’ve found that upgrades to the soft services in the home (curtains, bedding, linens) have a real impact and add pleasantries to the day. Things to consider: fabric content, weight, hand feel, and color possibilities. The anonymous towel compromises on all fronts. Below, a short list that doesn’t.

From top left:
Tekla Terry Towel
This is the towel of mention I’ve found really reliable. They’re 100% organic cotton, GOTS certified, 600 GSM (on the weightier side but not overdoing it), and the tag is a hanger loop. This color is called Pebble, a beige-green shade, but you can really get into the pinks, ochres, deep blues, and stripes of it all too.
Geismars Terry Towel
Geismars is a nice heritage brand from Copenhagen dating back to 1866. These towels are long-fibered cotton with long loops, thus have a deep, plush terry feel. They’re extra thick and soft, but still absorbent. This one is in Dusty Blue.
Georg Jensen Damask Terry Towel
The 1756 design house of Georg Jensen has a textiles arm, Georg Jensen Damask, of the same expected level of quality. They do a jacquard-woven terry towel in 550GSM cotton and a range of colors—this one is in Sage Green.
Magniberg Gelato Towel
Swedish brand Magniberg, partnered with Kvadrat, makes a series of “gelato” towels in saturated shades, like even this Coconut White, which is a deep cream color. The towels are made of 100% organic cotton with long loops and a folded hem. It’s made of heavyweight 625 GSM.
Baina Abel Bath Sheet
New Zealand brand Baina is a good stop for characterful bath towels. One of the more subdued offerings that I feel like goes with anything is the Abel Bath Sheet in Lake. It’s made of 100% organic cotton with a contrasting pinkish-red stitch in the center of a ribbed panel. 600 GSM and quick drying.
FRAMA Heavy Towel
I prefer the heavy towels at FRAMA over the lightweight version. This one, in Pale Yellow, is made of 30% hemp and 70% organic GOTS-certified terry cotton. They’re soft and thick and come in four shades.
